Canada Success Story 2016
Over 100 delegates of the Canadian Society of Agronomy (CSA) and the Canadian Society for Horticulture Science (CSHS) gathered in Montreal on July 24-26 at La Plaza Hotel in Montreal to hold an annual conference. The meeting was a big success and attracted delegates not only from Canada but also from Europe, USA and Asia. The conference organizing committee was led by Profs. Jaswinder Singh and Valerie Gravel of McGill University. The main theme of the conference was “Sustaining and improving agricultural production under the increasing complexities”. Prof Anja Geitmann, Dean of Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Science, McGill University inaugurated the meeting with her inspiring opening remarks followed by a plenary speech on “Wither Agronomy Research” from Dr Gilles Saindon, Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, AAFC, Ottawa, Canada. The conference focused on 7 different sessions including Food security and sustainability, Agronomy andcropping systems, Biotic stresses, Abiotic stresses, Nutrient and water management, Plant breeding and genetic resources and Genomics and biotechnology. Keynote lectures were delivered in each session by highly reputed scientists from Canada and abroad. Speakers include Drs. Maurice Moloney, Paul Fixen, Vladimir Vujanovic, Odile Carisse, Karen Tanino, Laura Van Eerd, Fred Stoddard and Jayasankar Subramanian. After concluding presentation sessions, a tour of Macdonald campus agronomy farm and horticulture centre was held where delegates got an opportunity to observe ongoing plant production research at McGill University.
